Deregulation
About energy deregulation in Maryland
The state of Maryland has been deregulated for electricity since the passing of the Electric Customer Choice and Competition Act of 1999.
Natural gas deregulation came the same year when the Maryland Public Service Commission approved plans allowing customers the ability to buy their gas supply from alternative suppliers.
While seven of the state’s smaller utility companies (those that fall into the category of Rural Cooperative Systems and Municipal Systems) do not participate in energy choice programs, the 10 largest utility companies do allow their customers to choose their own energy suppliers.
